Jeti Seafood Restaurant, Kuala Selangor

So after trekking and having some coconut shake and Cendol Bakar, it was soon lunch time! More like brunch time since it was 11am. The seafood restaurant that I wanted to go to opens at around 11am so our timing was perfect that day.

Jeto Seafood Restaurant

Interior of Jeti Seafood

There are a few seafood restaurants around this area, Kuala Selangor, but then I decided to try this one out because there are a lot of positive reviews about this place.

Menu

Cutleries soaked in hot water. Minced garlic and chopped chili.

We get to select where we wanted to seat. I chose the seating area closer to the sea so we could 'enjoy the scenery'. Actually theres nothing much to enjoy because the sea water isn't very clear, rather murky actually. Oh ya, they have sinks to wash your hands and the dirty water falls directly down to the sea so yeah, not of a scenery LOL

The sea below us :O

The lady who attended to us was very nice. She was very patient, considerate and would help you choose what to eat if you are out of ideas. The lady asked us what we wanted to drink but since we brought our own water there (yes, we wanted to scrooge on drinks since we are splurging on seafood), we told her no thanks. Surprisingly, that didn't make her sour. She said okay while smiling.

Then she was already ready to take our food orders but I needed a menu so I requested one from her. So she nicely took the menu, gave it to me and allow me some time to look though the menu. Some waitress are very impatient, all they want to do is get your order and get out of your face but the service at Jeti was very good.

So these was what we ordered:

Deep Fried Marmite Baby Octopus, RM14

My favourite baby octopus was very yummy! Deep fried till crispy and then folded in with marmite. The marmite tasted a little bitter towards the end though but overall I like this dish!

Butter Prawns, RM18 (small)

We ordered butter prawns but the prawns that came look and tasted more like cereal prawns. The bad part wasn't the cooking style but the fact that the prawns flesh was sticking to the shell when we wanted to remove it. Didn't taste like the freshest prawn that I was expecting.

Siakap, RM40

I ordered a deep fried Seabass with soy sauce drizzles but I forgot to tell the lady that I wanted a small fish. So when the fish came I was like OMG, this should cost at least RM60! Fishes in whole like this usually ain't cheap. But since it was my mistake to no inform her prior to cooking, I just happily ate it anyway.

It's been a long while since I had the privilege to eat such big fish! Such big fresh fish, you could taste the sweetness of its flesh. Usually I don't even eat fish, not even fish fillets because it's pricey. So I'll always cook chicken, Im a bird eater:S

But when the bill came, this fish was only for RM40!!! RM20 cheaper than market price?! I was the happiest person alive!

Baby Kailan, RM8

Also, last minute we decided to have a vege in our meal. Naomi suggested vege earlier but then I brush it off telling her that we're at a seafood place so we should maximise our money's worth and only order things that we can't get back in the city i.e. seafood.

But later after placing our orders, while waiting for our meal to arrive I was tempted to order a plate of vege because all other tables have them and they look so appetizing! And so, we did in the end:P

The vege was so- so though. You could cook this at home too LOL Actually, I thought that my homecooked salted fish cabbage tasted better than this.

FYI, a  small bowl of rice cost RM1.20 each.

Seafood spread, RM82.40 for 3 people

Price of seafood by weight

So all in all, a reasonably priced place to have your seafood. Very good service, it made me happy even before ordering my food. I'd no doubt return if Rebecca wants to try. Nevertheless, I have tasted better seafood as in tastier and fresher seafood.

FYI, the toilets here are very clean! Testified by Naomi :P

Outside Jeti restaurant are a row of shops selling sea product. By sea product I mean a variety of dried fish, dried anchovies, fish crackers, prawn crackers etc. All these are very very fresh! I bought mine from Lock Siew Moey.

Lock Siew Moey
Jalan Pasir Penampang, Kuala Selangor

Ikan Bilis (Dried anchovies), 100g RM4 | Udang kering (Dried Prawns), 100g RM3.50

Our buy

Sis and I shared money to get some souvenirs home for mum. Our fish crackers was RM7 for a pack of 8 I think. I regretted not buying some ikan bilis for myself, it would be so yummy to have them fried and sprinkled on fried rice or fried meehoon.

The lady who's selling these sea products is a little cunning though. She will try to brainwash you to buy more than you intend LOL So just be watchful.

Oh, btw they sell homemade ice- cream as well! They were sold in those push- pops casing, very nice.

Push pop ice- cream

Here you will also find this old school sundry shop run by this very nice old Chinese man. I didn't notice the name of the shop but its only a few shops away from Lock Siew Moey. Just saying:)

Cendol Bakar & Coconut Shake, Kuala Selangor

A quick post before I get sucked into my super busy week.

Last week, we had this very long holiday because it was Malaysia Day so I had mid Friday- Tuesday off. During the weekends, I decided to have a spontaneous trekking trip to Kuala Selangor. It wasn't that spontaneous actually, I was already thinking and planning about it a few days before but it wasn't till the 11th hour that I confirmed the venue to do some exercise LOL

One of the reason that made me choose Kuala Selangor Nature Park as my place to sweat it out is because there is seafood nearby. Opps, lolol. Also, as I was doing some research about the Kuala Selangor, I realised that people were blogging about cendol and what not, so I decided that Kuala Selangor will be the place for exercising!

The irony. LOL

After trekking, we decided to go for Cendol Bakar!

Cendol Bakar
Kuala Selangor
(Waze yourself there)

Sorry, couldn't get the address because it's sort of like in the woods. So there isn't a street name that I could jot down. But if you are travelling towards Kuala Selangor I'm sure you wouldn't miss it. Also, Waze would easily land you at the right spot!

The first thing I noticed once I got down the car was the drive through!

Cendol Bakar drive through

I was very facinated by the convenience that the shop had offered. I mean for business in a rather secluded area, that's real advancement! It's like having Starbucks drive- thru but even better because this is cendol!

I've seen this car who drove through and bought his cendol. It was very efficient, he got his cendol within minutes. Take away cendols were packed in those plastic cups with bubble cover. Having there cendol will be served in small metal bowls.

Sellers preparing take away cendol in cups

Old school metal bowls

Also, the have their menu printed on this banner so it's very easily for you to select which type of cendol you would like to have. The cheapest cendol is obviously the basic Cendol, RM2 and the most expensive cendol is the the Cendol Durian Pulut, RM4.50.

Menu- Can call somemore!

I noticed that there is a phone number there. I'm not too sure whether it's for large quantity pre- orders before you come pick them up or catering? OMG having a cendol booth, a durian cendol booth for a wedding is a splendid idea!

Counter to order

If you are having your cendol there, then its a semi- self service system. You would have to go to the counter and place your order and pay. Then you can take a seat and wait for the cendol to be sent to you.

Noticed that this stall has been on a Malaysia food TV program! That certifies how yummy their cendol are.

This snacking area has really pretty seating. They built the seating area all by themselves from wood and tree barks and made the roof by using leaves! So cool!

Self made seating areas

More seats, popcorn hanging up there- pluck and pay

One more picture of the cendol stall

Shaving ice

I know it may seem to be quite scary to have your snack/ beverage here because it doesn't seem to be like the cleanest food place. In fact, there are many flies all around but I didn't had food poisoning after having my cendol here so I think it's rather safe to dine here LOL

I think the cendol store is fine because despite their very kampung looking stall, they seem to be rather hygienic when dealing with food/ drinks. But then for other food sold, you just have to be watchful and go with your gut feelings.

For example, there will be nicely wrapped Nasi Lemak on the table but if you were to eat them, wisely select the ones that are thoroughly wrapped because there are flies all over. Those nasty flies would take any opportunity given i.e. tiny opening of wrapper.

Nasi Lemak for sale

What we had from the cendol stall was the Cendol Durian Pulut! The most expensive one because we can! hehehe All three of us shared one bowl so I only needed to fork out about RM1.20. It's a steal!

Cendol Durian Pulut, RM4.50

The Cendol Durian Pulut was really good. Love how fresh the durian flesh was and that the cendol was not too sweet unlike the ones that I had before at Jonker Street, Melaka. Very refreshing especially after all the sweaty trekking.

At the same vicinity, you will also find Coconut shake!!

It says "Welcome to Coconut Shake vs Cendol Bakar". Hmm, are they rivals? Because if they were the shake would totally lose out.

Coconut shake stall

Young chap running the business

So we had to wait for almost an hour for this young chap to start his business. He told us that we would have to wait till 10.45am to buy coconut shake but at 10.45am he was still setting up his stall i.e. washing all his utensils, chopping the coconut, etc

And so we waited and waited till for another 15 minutes. He probably wasn't a very enthusiastic entrepreneur. Maybe because he was forced to tend the stall all, by himself, by his parents. Actually there's a young girl helping him out as well but she only knew how to pour the blended shake into cups to sell so yeah, he was doing all the job.

Tonnes of coconuts

Finally, after about an hour's wait...

Coconut shake special!!!

Coconut shake special RM3.50

It tasted okay, not to bad. The coconut water wasn't in sync with the blended ice cream though. For this quality of coconut shake, the price charged seemed to be on the relatively expensive side. I managed to try out the Klebang Coconut Shake at Melaka, and that was fantastic! Better still, they only charged RM2.50 for a special!

But then again, if you are visiting Kuala Selangor you can always give the coconut shake a shot if he's already open for business. Not worth the one hour wait though.

The Hummingbird Eatery, Bandung

A continuation of my Bandung food post. This was the third day in Bandung, after lunch at Sindang Reret and teatime at Harvest, I had dinner at The Hummingbird Eatery! Now thinking back about the amount of food I had that day, it was staggering! LOL

The Hummingbird Eatery
Jl. Progo, Bandung

Interior of Hummingbird

A wall of info about hummingbirds

I didn't had a picture of the exterior of the cafe because it was very dark by then and I think it was also about to rain if I had not mistaken. Hummingbird has a very cozy interior, so it would be a good place for friends to hang out and have some tea and cakes.

Me and more interior of Hummingbird

Counter

Another picture of the counter, with basins of raw ingrediants below

I was very fascinated by the basin of fresh ingredients such as onions, potatoes, garlics etc. They look so clean and pretty and too good to be true! So I doubting if they were even real at all. Gaya asked the waiter if those were real, to which he answered yes with a puzzled face LOL

They were really too clean and perfect to be real ingredients! You should see my potatoes in the kitchen =.=

Anyway, here are some pictures of the many choices from the menu:

Menu 1

Menu 2

Menu 3

Special menu for Ramadhan

Haha yes, they do have many menus. Their menu look so cute too! Very much like their website. You should check out their website (as stated above). I'm thinking this is a place that girls would want to hang out because everything is so cute and sweet looking! Of course, this place is not limited to young girls because I've seen tai tai (old rich woman) dining there as well:P

Hummingbird's Nectar, recommended drink

Me, amazed at the menu. Forgot what amazed me.

Passion Twist, IDR 35,000 (RM10.60)

This was my drink recommended by Gaya. It's called Passion Twist. Basically it's soda with passion fruit and mint leaves. Not really my favourite drink because I don't usually take carbonated drink. But it tasted okay. I like how generous they were with the passion fruit.

It was a little torture to finish it all by myself because Gaya was down with the flu so she couldn't have cold drinks. Also, I think this was the most expensive drink I had in Bandung. I never had to pay more than RM8 for a drink that I couldn't finish cf. fresh thick avocado juice, yumms!

Top shot, mint leaves

Volcano Tuna, IDR 49,500 (RM15)

Gaya had pasta for dinner- Volcano Tuna. It tasted fantastic! I love how creamy it tasted and how well the flavour blends together with the tuna. They even give you a breadstick to dip into the cream if you can't get enough of it lol

Mushrooms Munchies, IDR 34,500 (RM10.40)

I, on the other hand, had something light to nibble on because I was already very full when it came to dinner time. I had some of Gaya's Volcano Tuna pasta and had my own platter of fried mushrooms! I love the sauce that came with it, some kind of mayo chili sauce combination I think.

The mushroom was so- so. Wasn't the best I've ever tasted. The quartered button mushrooms were breaded and fried. It lack taste though, very blant so you really got to dip it in the sauce. And because of that, I had to ask for more sauce. I always have this thought that if you are using too much of sauce, that means your food that you're dipping ain't good. Or else, you would eat it on it's own yes?

So verdict, Hummingbird is a nice place to hang out with your friends with a pot of tea or so but this isn't the best place for great tasting food. I saw their cakes on the counter that looked really good, no idea how it tastes though?

By far, the most expensive (relatively speaking) and the most mediocre food I had in Bandung. Something that I can easily find back in Malaysia. I appreciated the RM0.30 tahu goreng better at Tangkuban Perahu

p.s. 15% tax applies

Fat Spoon, Uptown Damansara

This week was a little relaxing for me because I only had to work for 6 hours in a week. Since it's Naomi's first week of the new university sem, I think she's also a bit free haha So we took the opportunity to go around to try out new food!

After watching "Maze Runner" (which was really good, better than the Hunger Games), we decided to have lunch outside and thought that we should try the Cempedak popiah with ice- cream at Fat Spoon, Uptown Damasara.

Another one

Main door

The main door looks very old and scary LOL I always think that they are closed because of the perception from the main entrance door. It's like rundown and abandoned. But that's the theme of Fat Spoon, trying to recreate the oldies vintage kinda shop I think. It's interesting to see the big fat spoon that is used instead of the normal door handle/knob.

Following are pictures of interior of Fat Spoon:

Tables

There were a few types of tables to create a variation in design. It was quite lovely actually. We sat on the wood/steel table with lots of "old marks". There were also marble tables. Marble tables always remind me of old chinese shops, like those kopitiam.

Our table with "old marks" to make it look old, lol

Lightings

Big mirror

Fat Spoon doesn't have very big space, they probably can accommodate about 50 people inside the shop? So they had a huge ass mirror to create an optical illusion of a larger space. Very much like KGB Burger, Bangsar.

Menu

Okay, so we were attracted to Fat Spoon solely for their recommended dessert- Cempedak Popiah with ice- cream but since it was about 5pm and we haven't had lunch, we decided to just have their main courses as well.

It took us a while to choose what to eat. Usually this happens for two reasons: (1) The selection is so awesome that we just don't know which to pick, we want it all!!! (2) Selection is not of our preference, so we're deciding based on the cheapest and thinking if we should just share the main course or just go for desserts.

In this case, it was reason (2). Yup, nothing much on the menu for main courses. I was actually craving for western food, so probably that made the menu seem more unappetizing than it actually is. But I was so hungry so this was what I ordered:

Ulam Fried Rice, RM12

I had Ulam Fried Rice for RM12, very heartache because I could have settled for my favourite nasi kandar, have my favourite thigh part of the chicken and have more vege for half the price. Nevertheless, it was rather tasty meal, just relatively expensive.

The portion given was rather little for the amount I was paying. I was given so less long beans that it looks sad even from the picture. The fried rice was okay, just that I had ulam poking my throat so I had to mix it with the sambal they have. The chicken was not too bad either, just that it's not as fragrant as my nasi kandar's one LOL

The papadom is as tasty as the nasi kandar ones!

My sis who was also having a hard time deciding, finally decided to go safe with Curry Chicken Rice.

Curry Chicken Rice, RM10

The curry tasted very home cooked which was good but the downfall was this thick layer of oil. My sister said that they gave her lots of rice so she couldn't finish it. Same portion of beans as mine.

As for drinks, we scrooged on warm water RM1 per cup so no pics on that.

Cempedak Popiah with ice- cream, RM12

Finally, dessert came!! The pull of Fat Spoon- Cempedak Popisah with ice- cream! This is really really good. We were given 5 popiah with cempedak fruit as fillings. Warm and sweet so yummy! Tasted even better with the vanilla ice- cream.

I was hoping that the ice- cream is homemade since it's their specialty but then I figure out that it's just Walls ice- cream. My sis and I shared the dessert so each of us fork out RM3. For the yumminess, it was worth it!

So I suppose the best thing we had there was the Cempedal Popiah dessert. Their other desserts like the Red Velvet cake cost about RM6 I think. They also had chocolate cake with ice- cream I think that cost about RM15.

Our bill came in a story book:

Story book used to collect money

It really is a normal story book, they just paper clipped the receipt. You close the hardcover book and hand the money back to them. Creative!

Though the food was not bad, the dessert was really good, I think I won't be returning anytime soon. Not my kind of main courses, and I think I'm able to recreate that yummy cempedak dessert at home- with ice- cream that I can buy off any supermarket counter:)
