SS Spicy Food @ Jalan Belfield, Kampung Attap KL

Last Sunday, I suggested for us to have lunch at Kg. Attap but to our dismay the stall was closed so we ended up eating at Pavillion's foodcourt. Don't ask, long story LOL Anyway, I was introduced to Kg. Attap by my bestie, Nit several years back and it is my favourite place to have mix rice because I love their deep fried cauliflower!!

Their deep fried cauliflower is da bomb! Every time when they lift it up from the wok and into the tray, the cauliflower will be snatched up by people so fast that you wouldn't be able to catch it despite being 3 people away :O

So you want their famous deep fried cauliflower? You gotta rush the Malaysian style HAHAHHA I'll show the the cauliflower later, I managed to whack half a plate of them!

Jalan Belfield aka Kg. Attap

So apparently they do have a stall's name and it's called "SS Spicy Food". I still call it Kg. Attap stall though LOL I think I've ever read about their curry fish head but I've never tried because not a big fan of fish head.

Waze yourself to Jalan Belfield and you would see the stall (as shown in picture below).

There's usually no problem finding a parking there because people would just simply by the side of the road and that's okay. The place is rather quiet so traffic isn't a problem too.

Self service

At SS Spicy Food aka Kg. Attap they cook the food there (See the man cooking behind?) and then turn around and place the freshly cooked food on the island table for you to pick and choose! So food there is usually hot from the kitchen!

You would need to queue to get your rice. The guy will ask you whether you want white rice or beryiani. Yes, they serve beryiani too but I've yet to try. Always go there, my goal is to whack all the fried cauliflower LOLOL. But I saw people eating beryiani and it looks quite yummy too! Wouldn't mind giving it a shot next time!

So once you have your rice, you move on to select your dishes. I like their curry lots so I'll usually mix several diferent curry gravy on my rice. Then I'll push through the line and quickly put as much fried cauliflower as I can on my plate without thinking of how much they would charge me later HAHA Then, I'll usually go for their... um, dry sambal chicken? Yums!

Lunch that day

So this was what we had for lunch that day:
  • Rice, mix curry & HALF a plate of fried cauliflower RM5
  • Teh ais & Teh- O Ais RM3
  • Rice, mix curry, fried chicken, fried fish & egg RM12

Their pricing is very reasonable so if you're around that area, might wanna give it a shot! You MUST MUST MUST try their cauliflower. When it's served piping hot, I swear it doesn't taste like vege! More like some kinda of snack, I must say. *Mindblown

A few pictures of the seating area. Sometimes it's hard to find for a place to seat especially peak hours but the guys there are very kind so they will help you find seats. We had to share a table with this lady who was finishing her meal that day, good that she chao soon after LOL

Very cooling seating area

Nirwana Maju, Bangsar

What a way to start my weekend! Yesterday, family reached late so when they arrived it was just in time for dinner. Everyone was very happy as we had korean meal for dinner at KimchiHaru. Everyone was happy till later on when my car got nudge (slight dent and signal lights came off) by this car.

My mood immediately switched 180 degrees from good to bad. Prolly, I was tired too because when I woke up today I instantly felt much better. Hence, decided to blog a little before I go out soon.

So a few weeks back, we decided to have banana leaf for lunch and he suggested a famous banana leaf rice shop in Bangsar!

Nirwana Maju
Jalan Telawi 3
(Open till lunch )

Saturday crowd

The place was very packed on a Saturday afternoon. Actually, the place is rather pack during weekends as well. I know this because I was suppose to have banana leaf rice with my sis (a long time ago) but we decided not to then because it was full house so we opted for KGB Burger instead.

We had to wait in the line for about 10- 20 minutes before we are being seated. However, the good thing is that while in line they will already be taking your orders so it speed things up very much. Once you are seated, the food will come flying in almost immediately.

Ordering while in line

Queuing

Once being seated, the waiter lays a banana leaf in front of you. That's your plate!

I'm usually not the biggest fan when it comes to banana leaf rice because personally I feel that banana leaf rice meal is rather expensive though shops usually charge RM5- RM8 for a vegetarian meal.

For those who are not familiar with banana leaf rice meal, you will be get the basic set of vegetarian meal complete with rice (refillable for free), three types of vegetables (refillable), assorted curries (refillable), papadom and sometimes rasam.

For those who can eat a lot of rice, then this meal would be bang for buck! That's because you can eat a mountain of rice, a mountain of vege, and a sea of curries for that RM5- RM8. But for me, I'll usually be able to have one serving of rice and one serving of each of the three vege- so the meal becomes relatively more expensive for me.

However, I totally change my mind when I came to Nirwana maju. Why?

Because they have my favourite deep fried battered vege!!!!

Step 1: Three types of vegetables

From left, cucumbers in yogurt, stir fry long beans and.... DEEP FRIED PETOLA!!! I usually like deep fried bitter gourd but I could have this petola (Luffa) as a substitute anytime because it taste sooooo good!!

As you can see I asked for a lot of deep fried vege! Actually, I didn't really asked for more per se, I merely gushed that I loved this vege lots and when the waiter who was putting the vege on my banana leaf heard me and saw my enthusiasm he smiled and say "You like ah?" and scoop me extra portion! Teehee.

Step 2: Add on rice

Step 3: Add on curry

Step 4: Add on side dishes

As I mention, the basic banana leaf meal is vegetarian (RM8) so if you need meat in your meat then feel free to order some side dishes! We had fried chicken (RM5) and mutton varuval (RM7). The chicken was awesome, love how well they marinated the chicken. There's no chance that the meat was left unflavoured. The skin was salty crispy good!!

The mutton, on the other hand, wasn't the best I've ever taste. My bestie's mum could probably cook better varuval:)

Complete meal

Well, actually the meal came with one free papadom and rasam that we decline. Papadom is one of my favourite but it's not refillable so you only will have ONE free piece. So what do you do?

Order a basket of papadom!!!! Duh.

One basket of papadom

The papadom at Nirwana Maju is one of the best that I have tasted. Not oily, very thin, light and crispy. You can eat them like snacks and not feel turn off (muak) after eating a couple! Forgot how much an additional basket cost though?

All in all, an extremely good place to have banana leaf rice. If you're on budget, you could just opt for the basic set (rice, 3 vege, curry, papadom, rasam) and get lots and lots of deep fried vege as refill! Very worth it!

Happy weekend everyone!

Jaipur Curry House, Bangsar + The Loaf, Sunway Pyramid

It's public holiday today and I got the rare chance to meet up with my bestie for breakfast. Since she's vegetarian I've gotta think of a place that offers good food, both vegetarian and non vegetarian. Sometimes I sigh when I think about suggesting our old favourite places such as Manhattan Fish Market, Sushi King, Steamboat (I mean not for breakfast) because obviously it would be insensitive to do so.

That's one of the reasons why I always have a headache thinking of where to go. For me it's not worth it paying for vegetarian food that's the same price as meat food. But I still want to go out and have good food with my bestie *Big sighs LOL

Anyway, today we decided to go for breakfast in our favourite shop! Jaipur Curry House!

Jaipur, Bangsar

This indian shop is located right opposite the Ramadhan bazaar. Same row as Secret Recipe. It's probably one of the few shops that I can find my putu mayam. Back in my hometown, this Indian uncle will usually ride his bike and sell putu mayam so we just have to stop him to get one pack of yummy putu mayam with lots of brown sugar and coconut.

Well, here in KL I have not seen such Indian uncle around. Maybe not around my housing estate. I hardly see Malay aunties selling yummy kuih. Where are all these uncles and aunties???

Btw, for those who are not familiar with putu mayam. It's an Indian delicacy made from rice flour if I've not mistaken. It looks like some kinda spider web vermicelli.

Simple interior Jaipur

Oh yes, Jaipur serves really good beryiani too! I think their beryiani is priced at RM10+. There is a option or chicken of mutton if I've not mistaken. Chicken is slightly cheaper than mutton but for me mutton taste better. And yes, they have vegetarian beryiani as well.

When I say good it's really good because I recommended this place to one of my friend and he was sold after giving their beryiani a go! He's a big curry/spice fan so if Jaipur meets his criteria then you know that it's really really good hehe

Of course they do serve banana leaf rice as well, both vegetarian and non- vegetarian. They also have all types of roti (e.g. roti canai, telur, bom, apam, puri etc) on the menu.

Indian uncle flipping/ stretching the dough to make roti canai

You could actually see the puri (deep fried dough) in the picture below. Usually when it's served to me it's still all puffed up but in the picture it has flatten :S

Mix rice dishes

So for breakfast, my first serving was putu mayam with brown sugar and coconut, RM0.80 and a piece of chicken currypuff, RM1.30. I have been craving for putu mayam for a long time and finally today my craving was fulfilled! Usually I crave that for dinner when I'm just sick and tired of eating all the complicated food- all I want is something light and easy i.e. putu mayam LOL

FYI, I only eat my putu mayam with brown sugar and coconut. Love how the sweetness of the sugar and the fattiness of the coconut merge! The thought of eating it with curry turns me off. Regardless, there are in fact many people who eats it with curry.

1st serving, putu mayam and currypuff

Swirled Putu mayam till all mixed up with sugar + coconut, heavenly!

Nit's drink Bru coffee w fresh cow's milk, RM3.30. My drink Teh tarik kurang manis, RM1.30.

First round of breakfast wasn't enough for me so I had another piece of putu mayam. This time I also ordered deep fried bitter gourd, RM2 as my side dish. And no, we usually don't eat them together but I love fried bitter gourd so when it came out fresh from the kitchen I just had to get some!

Fried bitter gourd

I think Dr Vicki will disapprove of me snacking on fried food for breakfast, if she reads this post HAHA Oh ya, about the chicken currypuff it was okay. They were generous with the fillings where they give you chicken and potato but my only problem was that the currypuff was not hot. It did look hot in that heating tray though so I was expecting hot crunchy currypuffs.

I think where currypuff is concerned I still rank IKEA currypuff #1! Gotta go back for more IKEA currypuff one of these days.

The Loaf, Sunway Pyramid

One of my coursemate is leaving for Indonesia for good because he has completed his honours here and wouldn't be pursing PhD till further notice so we all had a farewell dinner last Sunday. All five of us (one more was already back in Indonesia), met at The Loaf, Sunway Pyramid for dinner.

I have tried their buns there (LOVE LOVE LOVE the cranberry cheese bun) but not their main courses so it was a first time for me. I ordered a lasagna, RM9.80 (before tax) and it was rather good. Love the salad as well because the dressing was sufficient in quantity and in taste (sweet sour).

Garfield's meal

All three of us had lasagna. The farewell guy had laksa and he said it was not tasty- very bland. Farewell guy also had green tea bun which was superb!! Soft, sweet and fragrant. Fathun and her sons had pizza and quiche which were yummy!

So the verdict, go for buns/ pastries when at The Loaf. Forget the meals.

Btw, self service was rather horrid especially when we ordered so many things and it came at different timings and all. They would ring the bell, say the name of the dish and we had to scramble to the counter to see if it's ours (by comparing our receipt and the receipt attached to the plate) or someone else's who happens to order the same thing:S
